Skills application: Practice Your Interview Skills​

For both of your Assessment Methods, you will participate in an interview with the assessor. At different points in your apprenticeship, you have practised justifying your work and your approach. Now, we will have a mock interview with our peers to practice answering questions about each Assessment Method.

Before we start, there are a few key elements to consider when being interviewed.

Listen- If you’re unsure what the question is asking, invite the assessor to repeat/rephrase the question. Or ask clarifying questions!

  • Listen for invitations to address certain standards in the assessment plan.
  • Take notes on the key words during questions. These can be made on a document on screen

Answer- Quality beats quantity

  • Apprenticeships are all about in-work impact - make sure to talk about the impact/value you’ve added to the business!
  • Link back to the grading criteria**, remember what you’re trying to demonstrate in your assessment!
  • Don’t assume the assessor to be a technical expert in your business/field! ** Remember, there are different grading criteria for the portfolio and WBP.Evidence- Remember, being able to explain the theory/technical side of your portfolio will help the assessor validate your evidence.
  • For Portfolio KSB’s ONLY: You can introduce any additional evidence you wish the assessor to consider (if you didn’t cover everything in your portfolio - here’s a good chance). This extra evidence must be signed off by your manager.

  • Review the questions below

  • Pick the questions you would like to practice with a peer. Try to complete as many as you can! Timing

  • 3 minutes to review the questions, then start asking them.

  • Ask one question at a time, specify if it's from the WBP or Portfolio, then allow about 3 minutes for the answer.

  • Set aside 1 minute to take note of the feedback.

  • Once 20 minutesare complete, you will return to the main room for questionsFeedback Guidelines

As a reminder, while you review your peers' work, think of the four pillars of good feedback:

  • Constructive
  • Specific
  • Justified
  • Kind Questions

  • "Thinking about a machine learning solution you've worked on, how did you gather and refine user or business requirements to ensure the model would serve its intended purpose? Can you give an example of how a specific requirement influenced your design?"
  • "Describe the steps you would take to systematically clean, validate, and prepare data for a machine learning pipeline. Why is this important for downstream model quality?"
  • "Imagine you're deploying an ML model to production. How would you ensure security, scalability, and reproducibility, and what governance considerations would you need to keep in mind?"
  • "You've just completed an ML model deployment. How would you go about producing and maintaining its technical documentation to ensure it meets user requirements and can be easily understood by other engineers?"
  • "Beyond just meeting user requirements, how did you consider sustainability and responsible AI when designing your model? Can you provide an example of a choice you made and explain its impact?"
  • "When integrating data from disparate sources for a model, how do you evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to deliver maximum value to the organisation? What factors would lead you to choose one approach over another?"
  • "Describe a situation where you had to work with both structured and unstructured data. How did you develop or select an algorithm to extract meaningful signal from these varied sources, and how did you evaluate the success of that model?"
  • "You've been communicating about an ML model to a diverse group of stakeholders, including both technical and non-technical individuals. How did you adapt your communication methods to meet the needs of each audience, and how did you evaluate the impact of your communication on achieving common goals?"
