This module focuses on three key skills that you will develop by completing async units and attending workshops:

  • **Skill 1:**Develop a comprehensive understanding of the ethical challenges in AI and ML, including privacy concerns, bias mitigation and responsible data usage.
  • **Skill 2:**Develop comprehensive strategies for managing data to ensure fairness, transparency and accountability in ML models, focusing on ethical data practices, secure data handling and responsible data governance throughout the ML lifecycle.
  • Skill 3: Learn to develop ML and AI solutions that consider long-term societal and environmental impacts, ensuring sustainable and responsible ML and AI development.Understanding ethical challenges in AI and ML, including privacy, bias and responsible data use.

The Dutch childcare benefits scandal exposed how biased AI algorithms falsely flagged thousands of families for fraud, leading to severe financial and emotional distress.

If ethical AI principles had been followed, the system could have ensured fairness, prevented discrimination and safeguarded vulnerable communities from unjust consequences.

Organisations can implement bias detection tools, conduct regular fairness audits and establish clear AI ethics policies to prevent similar harms and promote responsible AI use.
