Applying Phase 1 skills
This hackathon focuses on three key skills that you will practise by working through an end-to-end AI/ML solution:
- Skill 1: Problem Identification & Scoping
Selecting a real workplace problem and framing it in terms of business goals, success measures, and suitability for an AI/ML approach.
- Skill 2: Solution Design & Application
Designing a realistic AI/ML solution by applying methodology, data strategy, model choices, and technical considerations, drawing on concepts from Modules 1-4.
- Skill 3: Project Planning & Execution
Working iteratively to plan, develop, refine, and communicate your solution, balancing technical feasibility, risk, governance, and stakeholder needs.
Applying skills to real-life scenarios
In this hackathon, you will select one of two problems to work on and apply the three core skills above.
- Option 1: Improving how Customer Service requests are handled at scale.
- Option 2: Anticipating audience engagement to support better content planning and scheduling.
These contexts reflect challenges faced by large organisations like the ones you work in, where AI/ML solutions must balance efficiency, decision quality, risk, and public trust. Doing this well requires clear strategy, sound methodology, and responsible governance.

- Where have you seen AI or data solutions need clearer strategy and/or constraints?
- What are some of the key blockers to forming a clear strategy or getting to the design stage?
- What are some of the opportunities that come from working iteratively?
